Incantations: Silenzio della Terra
Duo for flute and percussion, Silenzio della Terra, beautifully performed by Italian musicians Anna Lisa Pisanu, flute, and Filippo Lattanzi, percussion
This piece, inspired by the poetry of Mario Luzi, was written for Festa Italiana, which took place in Dublin in 1993. It was first performed by Concorde musicians Madeleine Staunton and Richard O’Donnell and has since travelled to Italy. The flute represents a mother’s voice, described in the poem Alla Vita as the source of all things.
Nelle stanze la voce materna
senza origine, senza profondita s’alterna
col silenzio della terra, e bella
e tutto par nato da quella.
Based in Bari in Puglia, Anna Lisa and Filippo tell me a wonderful story about this piece. Apparently, they met through playing this piece together some 20 years ago. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship, both musical and personal – they are now husband and wife.
